Project Update: School Masterplan

Westonbirt, UK

Designscape have teamed up with Greenhalgh Landscape Architecture to deliver a Vision Document and Masterplan for the future of Westonbirt Schools. The masterplan includes new sports facilities, parking arrangements, prep school buildings and additional teaching and staff spaces, delivering a more coherent, legible and safer site as a whole. The masterplan provides for the anticipated growth of the schools which has recently become fully coeducational after nearly 100 years of being girls only school. The development of the masterplan has involved extensive consultation with various user groups within the School – including pupils – and a year- long collaboration with Historic England, making use of their “extended pre-application” advice service. The Grade I listed Westonbirt House is at the heart of the school, which sits within 210 acres of Grade I registered Park and Garden. There are also numerous other listed buildings and structures within the school grounds. This extremely sensitive setting has made for some interesting challenges – demanding high quality architectural solutions to provide for the current and future users in a sensitive historic setting. We are looking forward to being involved with the next stages – delivering some interesting buildings over the next few years.Greenhalgh Landscape Architects have provided insight, expertise and enthusiasm to help ensure that the proposed new facilities are brought together in ways which will undo some unsympathetic changes made in the past and help to preserve and reinstate the original landscape vision.
