The Cowshed - Planning Approval

Bradford-on-Avon, UK

We are delighted to have obtained Planning Approval for a new home in Bradford-on-Avon, positioned within the conservation area and situated adjacent to a grade II Registered Park and Garden.

The site has an existing ‘Cowshed’ which is to be partially demolished and used as an annexe to the new house. Together with these alterations, we have also designed a new, partly two-storey, home which has been carefully positioned to establish a positive spatial relationship with the existing Cowshed.

Living accommodation is provided at entrance level, with a step down from the kitchen into the living/dining area to follow the sloped site. Glazed sliding doors open onto raised patios to the east and west, making the most of near and distant views across the countryside and reinforcing the building’s connection to the surrounding landscape. The master bedroom and yoga space on the first floor also benefit from long views out over the countryside.

The design enables the altered Cowshed and the new home to function together or semi–independently as a domestic annexe. Views from the house to the annexe are minimised to retain privacy, though the covered fire pit area is positioned centrally between the two buildings to create an informal meeting space where guests in the annexe are able to come together with the residents of the main house.
