Macaulay Buildings start on site

Bath, UK

Approved scheme

Rejected scheme

Work has recently begun on site for this extension to a Grade II listed late Georgian house on the edge of the City of Bath.

Promising early designs were frustratingly rejected by the Conservation Officer, despite the Council’s preapplication advice that they did not want to see “an extension added to an existing extension”. The Clients – as is often the case – did not have the time or patience to have to go through a planning appeal with an uncertain outcome. In the end a more modest scheme was eventually approved, which was strikingly similar to a scheme that was rejected at preapplication stage.

The modest single storey extension will house a new / enlarged kitchen and enable the house to be better connected to the garden. With glazing only really possible on one side, a large rooflight in the zinc roof will help daylight to penetrate deep into the plan.

However we are relieved to see work has now started, and should be completed by summer 2024.

Status:  Construction – completion June 2024

Client: Private Client

Contractor: HJ Paradise & Sons Ltd.
