Hayesfield School

Our design for a specialist science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) building for Hayesfield School shows innovative use of space. All internal circulation space doubles up as flexible teaching space and the roof of the new building is utilised as an accessible deck providing more usable external space. The single storey building has a low impact from inside and outside the site, maintaining the important panoramic views out from the existing main building. The new accommodation is designed around the sustainable principle of long life, low energy, loose fit: The layout is versatile enabling it to be used for diverse activities, passive environmental strategies minimise energy needs and the building itself becomes a learning tool for the students.
