The house was commissioned as the result of winning first prize in a national design competition for young Architects. The brief was for a house for a farm manager, and was designed as a response to the open landscape setting. The design also incorporated some innovations in low energy design which have proved to be successful in practice.

On completion the design also received a prestigious award at the Aluminium Imagination awards in 1990.
